BASEC suspend licence of Turkish manufacturer

ACI

Atlas Kablo Sanayi Ticaret Anonim Sirketi of Turkey has violated their BASEC product certification licence which has now been suspended by BASEC with immediate effect and until further notice. They are better known in the UK as Atlas Kablo who supply a number of cable distributors and wholesalers with PVC house wiring, flex and conduit wires.

Samples of their defective cable were passed to BASEC for investigation by the ACI, after ACI had tested them and found they did not comply with appropriate British Standards. BASEC then carried out their own independent tests, which confirmed the findings of the ACI.

Approved cables initiative revealed to electrical supply industry

"Rogue, dangerous cable to be eradicated in collaborative pledge to cable a safer Britain".

Today, the Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) launched its proactive and co-ordinated plan to investigate and address the issue of unsafe, non-approved and counterfeit cables in the UK marketplace. With an audience of electrical industry professionals, trade organisations, legislators, media and members of parliament, this new industry-wide initiative has the objective to communicate, educate and raise awareness of this serious issue.

BS 5308 SPECIFICATION WITHDRAWN

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has withdrawn the standard for instrumentation cable BS 5308:1986 Instrumentation cables parts 1 and 2. However, because of the extent of the worldwide recognition and demand for these cable types, there is a new publication - PAS 5308-1:2009 Control and Instrumentation cables.  Part 1: for polyethylene insulated cables and Part 2: for PVC insulated cables.

BASEC issues warning notice

BASEC has issued a public warning notice about certain cables which have been sold into the UK market.
The cables are not BASEC approved and do not carry the BASEC mark.
The cables are multi-core PVC sheathed XLPE insulated steel wire armoured cables, of type BS 5467, in various sizes that are commonly used for low voltage power distribution.

TRATOS director to represent BCA on BASEC board

Neil Ancell, joint Managing Director of Tratos Ltd. has been appointed to represent the BCA – British Cables Association on the BASEC board. His extensive knowledge and experience of most aspects of electrical cable manufacturing, gleaned through over 30 years with Greengate Cables; Sterling Greengate and latterly North West Cables Ltd until the acquisition by Tratos, was deemed an obvious benefit to both organisations.

TRATOS HELPS PROTECT WIMBLEDON CENTRE COURT

Tratos Ltd., the UK distribution subsidiary of electrical cable manufacturer Tratos Cavi Spa. of Italy, is pleased to announce its Firesafe TW950 cable has been used extensively throughout Centre Court at Wimbledon as part of the voice evacuation and fire alarm system.

Wimbledon’s famous Central Court has recently been refurbished and fitted with a new retractable roof which has been much publicised.  As part of that extensive refurbishment, 20,000m of Tratos’ Firesafe TW950 fire resistant cable has been installed, from 2 to 27 core in size.  The cable was selected for this installation because of its off the shelf availability and its attractive price.

Tratos produce 18km continuous lenght of subsea fibre

TRATOS recently supplied a 24 Optical Fibres cable suitable for subsea installation up to 200 meters in depth for the ADRIATIC LNG Terminal which required a continuous length of 18km.

The Adriatic LNG terminal is a liquid natural gas offshore terminal nine miles offshore near Rovigo, Italy in the northern Adriatic. It is the world's first offshore LNG terminal. When the terminal becomes fully operational, it is expected to store and regasify 21.8 million cubic meters (770 million cubic feet) per day, enough to meet 10% of Italy’s natural gas needs.

Testing Times for the Cable Industry.

The British Approvals Service for Cables is stepping up its scrutiny and testing of cables on the market in the UK, with the active support of the British Cables Association (BCA).

BASEC purchases a range of products from the open market to check conformity.  End users also approach BASEC when they experience problems with cable they have purchased.  On testing, many of these are found not to comply with British Standards, and some could be considered as dangerous.

HV Extension

TRATOS Cavi have completed the building and commissioning of their 6 million euro extension at the Pieve Santo Stefano site in Arezzo, Italy.

This will house their new Continuous Vulcanisation line for the completely dry curing of polymeric High Voltage cables up to 132 kV.
