Tratos Cavi S.p.A. has been producing cables for use in the oil and gas industry throughout its 40 year history.

Tratos Cavi has formed an alliance with pioneering Brazilian cable manufacturer MFX to produce bespoke subsea umbilical cables for use in offshore oil production and thermoplastic high pressure hoses.

MFX has earned an excellent reputation over the past 26 years for its top quality engineered products and services. The company continually invests in R&D and, most recently, has introduced product qualification tests, a new group of specialised employees, selected suppliers and associated consulting services, all with the aim of increasing speed and flexibility, as well as respond to new and future challenges in the oil and gas markets.

This business strategy is very much in line with that of Tratos, which also has a considerable presence in the oil and gas markets, making the two companies an ideal fit. Working together, Tratos and MFX will design and manufacture bespoke cable solutions for customer’s precise needs.

An umbilical is a set of hoses electrical cables and tubes, that transport hydraulic and chemical injection fluids, as well as electrically transmitted signals and power. Its function is to activate opening and closing mechanisms in the subsea oil and gas production equipment monitoring the well’s characteristics (temperature and pressure).

Tratos Cavi in co-operation with MFX of Brazil produces hydraulic, electro-hydraulic and electrical umbilicals that are able to carry out diverse activities for controlling chemical processes and injections for subsea oil and gas extraction in wells located at depths up to 2000 metres. For specific application umbilicals have been qualified for depths of 3000 metres. MFX has already produced more than 500 km of umbilicals – all of which, from the earliest to the most recent production, are functioning normally and fully complying with the functions for which they were designed.

These umbilical subsea cables allow for hydraulic and injection fluids to be transmitted, as well as power and data, depending on the cable type. The cables have been tested extensively both in laboratory trials and actual installations and have proven to be exceptionally reliable.
